New Features in Google Drive

If you haven't been looking lately, there are several new features in Google Drive that every teacher should be aware of. These include the ability to use voice typing, link sharing, and setting expiration dates for access to files in your Drive.

New Feature #1: Voice Typing

This is an easy option to enable and was a long time coming. Once you have opened your new or existing doc, click on the tools menu and select "Voice typing...":

A new pop-up window will appear. Click on the microphone to begin using voice typing. When finished, click on the microphone again:

For additional information and a list of voice commands, please see the following help article.

New Feature #2: Link Sharing

Google has made it even easier to share a link to a file in your Drive. Begin by locating the file you would like to share and right clicking it:

Select "Get sharable link" and the link to your file will automatically be copied to your device's clipboard. Remember that this is a "read only" link, so if you would like to add someone as a collaborator, you will need to do this through the regular "share" settings.

New Feature #3: Set Expiration Dates for Access to Your Files

There are times when you may want to provide access to a file for only a short period of time. Perhaps you want to share something with your students for only the duration of the lesson or you're working with your colleagues on a project over the next couple of weeks. Drive now gives you the ability to set an expiration date for specific files when providing collaborators view or commenting access.

This feature is slowly rolling out over the next two to three months. If you don't see it right away, be patient.

There you have it! Three new and extremely useful features in Google Drive no teacher should be without. Now you can have greater control over not only who has access to your files but for how long, and compose new documents using your voice. As always, Google continues to update and improve Drive at a rapid pace.
